Simms/Mann – UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology

Providing quality of life for patients receiving care for cancer.

360-Degree Healing

Polly Roberts, a professor of world arts and cultures at UCLA, had no history of cancer in her immediate family. But in 2010, just weeks after an annual mammogram and breast exam came back normal, she felt a lump, and an ultrasound detected two very large tumors and five affected lymph nodes. Roberts was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer that had spread throughout her liver with more lesions than could be counted. Her family’s world had turned upside down.

While receiving rigorous chemotherapy treatments at the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center, Roberts received a different kind of care at Simms/Mann through spiritual reflections, healing lectures and a supportive community. Eight months later, her tumors had all but disappeared, and she resumed her busy schedule as a mom, full-time professor and part-time museum curator, all with a transformed outlook on achieving her goals and an appreciation for life’s detours.

Built on a foundation of academic research and advanced treatment approaches, the Simms/Mann Center provides integrative care for individuals and families touched by cancer. We know medicine is not enough for our patients, and quality care doesn’t end after they leave the doctor’s office. Our patients are looking for help beyond chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. In the quest to optimize wellness, most patients want and need information, guidance and support that address nutrition and supplements, mind and body approaches, psychological concerns and more.

We offer highly specialized professional services to complement conventional medical care, such as counseling and psychiatric care, individualized support groups, meditation techniques, art therapy and Qigong. At Simms/Mann Center, we treat the whole person, not just the disease.

“The ability to care for a patient's psychosocial needs is as critical as providing for their physical needs, and without that added support and the time and resources that are provided to the patient through the Simms/Mann Center, I would be only half a doctor and the patient would be receiving half the care.”
Dr. Sara HurvitzDirector, UCLA Breast Oncology Program
