We are deeply appreciative of our donors and their support of UCLA’s endeavors. While there was a time when state funds covered almost every dollar UCLA needed to operate, today only 7 percent of the University’s total budget is paid for through the state’s general fund. Private philanthropy provides the resources UCLA requires to continue growing its stature as a global leader in the creation, sharing and application of knowledge.
In May 2014, UCLA launched The Centennial Campaign for UCLA in anticipation of the University’s 100th birthday in 2019. The Campaign will ensure that UCLA remains intellectually vibrant and continues to serve California and the greater society as an extraordinary resource for knowledge creation and dissemination.
Please visit LetThereBe.ucla.edu to find information about the need to increase the endowment and support for UCLA.
Every donation matters. Every donation counts. Your gift of any size helps ensure UCLA’s excellence now and in the future. You are encouraged to explore the site and find a school, department, campus area, fund or cause that matters to you, and *make a gift, of any size.
*Please note, recurring gifts require a $10 minimum monthly payment. There is a maximum $250,000 one time gift capacity for gifts submitted through this site.
A gift is a generic term that includes Outright Gifts, Deferred Gifts and Pledges, the assets of which are irrevocable and can include cash, securities, real property, tangible personal property or other non-monetary assets.
UCLA derives support from formal, approved appeals (solicitations) to potential donors to provide for various University programs. Fundraising and its results have become crucial to the continued and future excellence of UCLA. All aspects of fundraising, including Solicitation, Accepting Gifts and, as necessary, the return of Gifts, are conducted in an organized and professional manner.
All Gifts are solicited and accepted in support of UCLA, either in the name of The Regents of the University of California or The UCLA Foundation, and become the property of the respective entity upon acceptance. The dollar amount of the Gift shall be the amount of cash actually received; the fair market value of property received (less any benefit retained by the donor); or, if in the form of a Pledge, the full amount pledged.
DEFINITIONS Accepting Gifts: *Legal acceptance of a Gift by an authorized campus official. This includes taking title to a tendered Gift in the name of The UCLA Foundation, and notifying the donor.
*External Affairs Staff in the Divisions of Development and Advancement Services share the primary responsibilities for the Solicitation of Gifts (Development) and for Accepting Gifts in an amount not exceeding $1,000,000 for existing programs or previously approved projects and not specifically requiring the approval of The Regents or the President, and returning gifts, and the official record-keeping (Advancement Services). Therefore, these Divisions within UCLA External Affairs have jurisdiction over all campus fundraising activities.
Outright Gift: A voluntary and irrevocable donation of cash or property that may be used immediately.
Deferred Gift: A broad description for charitable gifts that provide a deferred benefit to UCLA. There are two major categories of Deferred Gifts: revocable and irrevocable. The most common type of revocable gift is a bequest intention made via will, living trust, IRA or insurance proceeds. Irrevocable Deferred Gifts generally provide immediate tax benefits and often a lifetime income for the donor. Examples of irrevocable Deferred Gifts are charitable trusts, gift annuities, and pooled income funds.
Pledge: An irrevocable written agreement to pay a specified amount of money according to an agreed upon schedule.
Solicitation: Any communication to potential donors requesting gifts to the University.
As a top-tier public research university located in the most multiethnic and multicultural city in the world, UCLA’s influence is as far-reaching as it is profound. Rooted in its public mission to provide education and opportunity for all, UCLA is also a powerful force for innovation and positive change, committed to making a difference in individual lives—and to making the world a better place. For nearly 100 years, our successes have been fueled by bright, innovative and talented optimists in hundreds of fields of endeavor working together to deliver solutions in every area of life. Today, we are poised and ready to break down new barriers, overcome fresh obstacles and push further into unexplored frontiers. In our next century, with the help of The Centennial Campaign for UCLA, we will continue to turn our passion into promise and create a brighter future for all of us.
The best way for UCLA to preserve our public interest is through private support. Our goal is to raise $4.2 billion over the course of the Campaign. Those funds will help ensure that UCLA can do more than maintain the status quo—they will allow us to continue to achieve the seemingly impossible and help us forge new ways forward in our quest to build a better tomorrow.
An endowment is a fund established by gift in which the donor has imposed the restriction that the principal remain intact; only income and growth from the principal can be used to support the stated purpose of the fund.
