Enhancing physical education for a healthier, more successful generation.

Breaking a sweat to change lives

With childhood obesity and inactivity on the rise, physical education remains one of the most practical ways to combat this epidemic. PE is the only class that impacts the whole child. Research has shown that physical activity among children and adolescents improves academic outcomes, has positive effects on mental health, encourages social-emotional development and provides students with opportunities to have fun and be active.

The problem? It is among the most unfunded and under-resourced classes in schools today.

UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind champions physical education by providing schools with commercial-grade fitness equipment, innovative curriculums, and professional development to middle and high school educators across Los Angeles. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that all youth have access to safe and effective resources to encourage physical activity and promote healthier lifestyles.

  • UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind has provided access to fitness resources for more than 170,000 students across Los Angeles, each year.
  • Our program has opened fitness centers in 137 schools.
  • Since we began in 1998, we’ve helped more than 750,000 kids find an affinity for fitness and lead more active lives.

Beyond enhancing PE programs throughout the Los Angeles area, UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind introduces the next generation to fun and engaging ways to learn to love fitness inside and outside of the classroom. Our program has successfully improved fitness levels in countless youth while also generating growth in perceptions of exercise and body image, all while increasing overall participation in healthy behaviors.

Your gift will help us fuel tomorrow’s leaders with the tools necessary for building a healthier lifestyle.

“I have a more positive mindset, I feel more energized all the time, I feel more motivated and confident to do the things I do now. I became happier, I’m more confident in the way I act with others.”
Joshlyn Ramirez Joshlyn Ramirez, high school junior after one year of participating in the SBSM program
